Speaking by Design - Social Awareness Campaign
The Art Institute of Houston
As a team, we had to create a social awareness campaign to address the issue of students not adequately speaking about their projects/designs.
We had to utilize social media as the main tool for the campaign therefore we created a hashtag of #SBD… followed by catchphrases to grab the audience's attention immediately.
Each catchphrase went along with the main programs of study: Design, Media Arts, Fashion and Culinary. Each of these catchphrases had a specific subtopic and content that helped inspire students to become better by having better speaking habits and demeanor.
We also had to have three promotional items that went along with the campaign to help spread awareness.
The promotional material used were:
-
Reminder rubber wristbands that were available in the 4 main colors of our campaign that went along with the programs of study which displayed their unique hashtag.
-
USB stick in the form of a key so that students could add to their keychain and wouldn't have a reason to know have a storage device.
-
T-shirts that displayed the 4 main colors of our campaign that went along with the programs of study with each unique hashtag.

Speak: If you believe that your work is amazing, then you should talk about it. The only way everyone will appreciate your hard work is if they know about it, and the best way to tell people about it is through word of mouth. Strike up a conversation with your peers so that not only they hear about your work but you can hear about their work also. Networking is everything so start talking and sharing your work at #SBDeatme.
Confidence: If you want people to listen when you speak about your work, speak confidently. The most effective way of encouraging people to listen to what you have to say is to portray confidence. When you speak with confidence it draws attention to what you have to say and what you have done. Be proud of your work, speak confidently about it and share it at #SBDdressmeup.
Perseverance: Most success stories are the follow up of multiple failures. Do not be discouraged if you feel as if you can’t speak well about your work or that people do not listen to you. Continue to stand behind your work because practice makes perfect and the more you talk the more people will start to listen. Do not give up. Just because at first you do not succeed, try again and show perseverance by sharing and speaking about your work at #SBDplaywithme.
Passion: One thing that will always shine through someone is passion. The more passionate you are about something the more time and effort you will spend working on it. Take some of that passion you put into your work and put it into your conversation. When people sense your passion for something they are more inclined to listen to what you have to say. Speak about your passion and share what you are passionate about at #SBDlaymeout.
